I just had a few epiphanies in the Photographic world, I figured out how to take photos manually, and I know a bit about composition, but now I want to try lighting.
What are some lighting tips I can use to shoot a model for my school project. It doesn’t have to be perfect because it’s for my high school Photo Class. What would be the best time of day to shoot outside? How can I get started with indoor lighting?
Oh and yes I’m using a DSLR.

always try to keep the sun beside the model ,watever time in daylight. it provides a non uniformity with some texture. use fill in flash in bright sunlight if u have DSLR so as to avoid dark shadows on face.

I suggest you use your imagination. Check some of the websites which sell floor lamps such as pottery barn, home depot, Costco.
Have a look at what they offer and try to imagine what would this lamp look in your room, given all the colors and elements you mentioned.
A floor lamp takes less space and lights more area. Obviously, also cheaper as you don’t have to buy an end table. A modern metal finish (chrome) fits with almost most styles.

Each lamp uses an 11W bulb, so it shouldn’t use too much power, right? I’m attaching the lamps to a center piece, and hanging it from a ceiling fixture. I’m assuming desk lamps don’t have a ground wire, but then again, I’m not too familiar with this sort of thing.

If you attach to a center piece, run all wires to that point. That will be the junction point. There you can attach all the grounds, and hots together. Use a new section of 18/2 to run from that point up to the junction box. you can also attach an additional ground to the center piece for safety. That is about all I can help you with not seeing your parts and not knowing exactly what the configuration really looks like. You will be fine with wattage control, but another consideration will be the weight of the piece when you are done. If it exceeds 60lbs you will need additional bracing in the j-box to handle the weight.

I have two vintage table lamps with huge (upward-facing) glass globes over the bulbs but I need more height for the shade than that. Anyone have info on what to do? Can I buy a harp with a circle on the bottom, THEN add my shades? Can’t seem to find this in the usual places. Thanks!

That type of shade is not one that you will find at just any store. The standard ones, with what is called a chimney harp, are very Limited in size. Your best bet would be to find a Lighting Showroom that deals with a manufacturer. You will get more sizes, and choice of different materials to choose from along with the ability to add on a chimney harp.

I am moving into an older apartment and there are no ceiling lamps in the bedroom and living room. I bought a floor lamp from Walmart and 75W ‘daylight’ energy saving bulb from Home Depot. I find the lighting dull and not good enough to read with-I’m a student. This is really bothering me, how best can I light the rooms using lamps and have adequate light in them? I want them well illuminated and don’t want to ruin my eyes either.

I had the same problem with lighting.
I ended up putting a big floor lamp in one corner and little lamps in the other corners on my dresser and night table.

I’m not an antiques expert, but I would say it has real value. It’s obvious that the hardware is of good quality, the design is unique and elegant, and the globe is intact.
Look up “Stiffel” “lamp” “value” on Google.com Advanced Search. You’ll find that these lamps are still in demand, and the nicer old ones are probably worth even more than when they were new.
